While touring may require plenty of physical exertion, the payoff can make it worth the extra effort. Alpine touring takes you off the beaten ski trails to learn fresh snow and spectacular views.

If you’re ready to skip the ski lift and experience backcountry skiing, you’ll need some extra gear and a excellent guide. Alpine touring doesn’t necessarily require different gear than what you’d use for downhill or cross-country skiing, but investing in some specialized stuff can make the trek safer and more enjoyable.

As far as time commitment, climbing a snow-covered mountain can take a few hours — and, considering that one hike up will get you just one ski down, you could spend a day or even a few weeks alpine touring.

One of the largest draws of alpine touring is the sense that you’re headed into undiscovered wilderness. The sport is growing in popularity, but there are still plenty of hills that are rarely touched by other skiers, so you’ll feel the fresh snow crunching (or slipping) beneath you as you explore the land.

But before you head out to find the next empty mountain, there’s some information you’ll need to have — from what to bring to who to travel with. Traditional ski trails are marked and defined, but the pristine alpine touring trails are typically not regulated by a ski resort, which means you’ll have to depend on an expert guide so you don’t end up skiing over a cliff or causing an avalanche.

Every year, the world experiences hurricane season. During this period, hundreds of storm systems spiral out from the tropical regions surrounding the equator, and between 40 and 50 of these storms intensify to hurricane levels. In the Northern Hemisphere, the season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, while the Southern Hemisphere generally experiences hurricane activity from January to March. So 75 percent of the year, it’s safe to say that someone somewhere is probably worrying about an impending hurricane.

Tsunami kali ini memang masih kalah dasyat ketimbang tsunami di Aceh. Namun meskipun demikian, korban yang berjatuhan juga cukup banyak. Dikabarkan Tsunami yang menerjang desa-desa di Mentawai setinggi 7 meter. Hal ini dilihat dari jejak tsunami yang diukur dari pohon kelapa yang seluruh pohonnya ada bekas lumpur sampai ke seluruh batang.

Gelombang tsunami yang tertinggi melanda Dusun Muntei, Desa Batumonga, Kecamatan Pagai Utara, Mentawai, Sumatera Barat (Sumbar). Berdasar keterangan yang diperoleh dari Ketua Sinode GKPM Kepulauan Mentawai, P Simanjuntak, bencana tsunami tersebut menghancurkan semua perumahan yang ada di dusun tersebut.

“Gelombang tsunami mencapai tujuh meter, sangat tinggi. Semua rumah yang ada di dusun itu hancur, tidak ada yang tersisa. Penduduk yang selamat, sekarang ini sangat membutuhkan bantuan,” kata Simanjuntak kepada detikcom, Rabu (27/10/2010).

Bekas-bekas gelombang tsunami itu, kata Simanjuntak, bisa dilihat pada batang-batang pohon kelapa yang ada di tepian pantai. Dusun tersebut berada hanya sekitar 150 meter dari bibir pantai, sehingga warga yang menjadi korban cukup banyak, mencapai 58 orang, dan puluhan lainnya dinyatakan hilang. Sementara korban yang selamat, yang berjumlah sekitar 80 orang, berlindung di pondok-pondok tanpa dinding.

“Saat ini mereka yang selamat, bertahan di tiga pondok tanpa dinding di ladang mereka. Umumnya yang selamat itu, remaja pria usia tanggung, dan bapak-bapak muda. Banyak di antara mereka yang terluka, namun belum mendapat bantuan medis,” kata Simanjuntak.

Simanjuntak menyatakan, dia berkunjung ke dusun tersebut pada Selasa (26/10/2010) sore dan meninggalkan lokasi menjelang malam. Menurutnya, selain di Muntei, ada empat dusun lain yang kondisinya sama kerusakannya dengan Muntei. Banyak korban jiwa dan korban yang selamat belum mendapat pertolongan.

Gempa 7,2 SR melanda Mentawai pada 21.40 WIB, Senin (25/10). Gempa ini menyebabkan tsunami di kawasan Mentawai. Tinggi gelombang mencapai 3 meter yang menyapu kawasan di pinggir pantai. Korban kemungkinan akan terus bertambah.
